FILMS
This month's pickings are very slim: The Boys in the Band, and Something for Everyone, both at the New Mayfield.
The Boys in the Band (shown Mon., Aug. 5, 7:15 and 9:30) was released in 1970. Vito Russo calls it a homosexual period piece, and its ambience is certainly homosexual rather than gay: Historically important, it is also worth seeing as a portrayal of preliberation existence that shows you what homosexuals used to be like: packed with stereotypes. Remember "Show me a happy homosexual and I'll show you a gay corpse"?
Something for Everyone plays Tues., Aug. 6 (also at 7:15 and 9:30). Although this is a gay cult film, Russo hates it. His dislike is understandable, from the gay viewpoint. Michael York's bisexuality in this film is only part of his amorality and another_ploy to advance himself. But-and this is a very large but --if you forget gay sensibility, the film is very funny, the acting is good] and Angela Lansbury as usual is superb.
